Free Workshop: Short Manuscript Preparation

In conjunction with National Poetry Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I’ll be giving a 2-hour workshop in preparing short manuscripts for publication. The workshop will be held from 2-4 p.m. on April 8 at the Sahara West Library (9600 W. Sahara Ave.). The event is free and open to all, and fellow writers at all stages (and, more specifically, poets who identify as women) are especially welcome.

We’ll start the workshop by discussing a group of 10 published poems I’ve selected from a variety of women authors on the subject of sexual assault. I’ll then discuss the concept and logic behind arranging materials for a poetry chapbook or other short prose collection. Attendees will independently order the group of poems and will be given time to free-write either a poem to add to the group or a statement (like an editor’s letter) explaining why they arranged the collection the way they did. We’ll then discuss as a group how attendees chose to arrange their poems and consider the implications these arrangements have on manuscripts overall. Attendees will have the opportunity to read what they wrote, if desired. The workshop will conclude with some statistics on sexual assault as well as a brief reading.

Hope to see you there!
