Book reviews!
Authors want them! But how to get them?
Authors write them! But then what?
Whether you’re a writer looking to get your book reviewed or one who’s looking to review books and/or get your reviews published, this non-exhaustive list covers 300+ outlets — newspapers, review services, literary journals, and more — that publish them. Publication of book reviews happens in a variety of ways, so I’ve highlighted the following info next to each outlet’s name:
- whether it accepts pitches or queries (ideas for reviews but not the reviews themselves)
- whether it accepts finished reviews (full written pieces reviewing a book or books, which can be submitted the same way as a poem, story, etc, is.)
- whether it has on-staff reviewers (meaning that, as a book author, you can often send your review copy directly to the outlet for review consideration and prospective coverage)
- whether it is seeking additional staff or contributing reviewers
- or all of the above!
Some of the outlets seek short reviews; some seek longer ones. Some seek only certain types of books or affiliations; some are open to all. Some are open year-round; some only during specific periods. Some pay reviewers; some require authors to pay; most do neither. Every once in a while, reviewers receive free hard copies of books from outlets seeking reviews. There are lots of interesting opportunities all the way around, and while those are not all detailed below, you can find out which outlet does what by visiting the links I’ve included next to each outlet.
There are far more outlets seeking reviews and reviewers than there are folks who advertise themselves to fellow writers as book reviewers. However, if you happen to be a poet like me, I have crowdsourced a list of folks kind enough to indicate publicly that they review poetry collection. Shout-out to them for the work they do and their dedication to poetry! And for everyone else, there’s this great genre-searchable list from The Indie View to check out!
The list of outlets that publish book reviews below is intended to be a living list, meaning that any outlet can be added or removed at any time by simply requesting so via my Contact Me page. And as I mentioned earlier, this list is non-exhaustive, meaning it would be impossible for me to have found every single place in existence that takes reviews, but I did note below all I was able to find relatively easily.
Some tips specifically for authors wanting their books reviewed:
- Start early — as in, months before your release date. I cannot emphasize this enough. Some outlets will only consider writing or publishing reviews of books months before their official release dates. I recommend at least 7 months of lead time, especially with the bigger outlets that have on-staff reviewers that you might send your ARC (physical or digital) to.
- Start with the folks you know and who know you. This is a massive list that honestly ended up overwhelming even me as I was putting it together, realizing just how many outlets are interested in reviews. So I’d recommend starting with any places on the list you’ve published pieces with; most journals are glad to prioritize considering forthcoming books from past contributors for reviews — and bonus if a piece/pieces you published with said outlet appear in the book you’re requesting a review for (don’t forget to mention it when you reach out to them)!
- Start backward. One of the reasons I included the lists of book reviewers as part of this post is because, though it may seem counterintuitive, you might actually be more successful landing a book review by landing the book reviewer first and letting them leverage their pre-established network and relationships with outlets that publish reviews and where they may have published with before.
- Start — period. Is your book already out? Did you miss the submission window with some of these outlets below? Does the outlet only accept print ARCs, but yours is digital? Don’t have a publisher who’s helping you get book reviews, and going it alone instead? Don’t sweat it! There are still plenty of opportunities out there to get your book reviewed — even as late as a year after its release date, even with just digital ARCs, and even if you’re doing it all on your own. Important note: This list was compiled through an open call as well as by researching a variety of free online resources, including the 300+ journals’ websites themselves. You should always research outlets you send your books to for review to see if their reviewing methods, community presence, etc., aligns with your goals and perspectives, if that’s important to you.

Carousel Magazine, accepts finished reviews (Submissions are always open for experimental reviews. It also publishes traditional (1000-1500 word reviews) and short (250 word) capsule reviews but are only occasionally open for submissions of those. Which books get reviewed depends on what is submitted or pitched by reviewers, for the most part, but it also welcomes catalogues from presses so it can make those available for consideration to some of our ongoing reviewers (presses should DM the outlet). Its Reviews Editor is Jade Wallace @nycterosea. They occasionally write reviews but primarily curate & edit submissions. It is open to any recent titles that fall under the fairly capacious umbrella of ‘literary’ (fiction, poetry, graphic fiction, hybrid work). It never charges submission fees for reviews and pays for all accepted reviews, rates varying depending on the type of review.
